5 Signs It's Time to Schedule a Dental Checkup
By Dr. Michael W. Lee, DMD · Jul 21, 2026

Most people know they should see the dentist every six months — but life gets busy, and it's easy to let a checkup slide. The trouble is, many dental problems are painless until they're serious. Here are five signs it's worth picking up the phone.
1. It's been more than six months
Regular cleanings and exams catch small issues — a tiny cavity, early gum inflammation — while they're still easy and inexpensive to treat. If you can't remember your last visit, that's your sign.
2. Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
Occasional bleeding can be normal after a break from flossing, but persistent bleeding is often an early sign of gingivitis. Caught early, it's completely reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care.
3. You feel sensitivity to hot or cold
Twinges when you sip coffee or ice water can point to enamel wear, a small cavity, or an exposed root. It rarely goes away on its own — and it's much easier to address early.
4. You have a persistent bad taste or bad breath
Ongoing bad breath that doesn't improve with brushing can signal trapped bacteria, a developing cavity, or gum disease. A checkup pinpoints the cause.
5. Something just feels "off"
A rough spot, a tooth that feels loose, a sore that won't heal, or discomfort when you chew — trust your instincts. It's always better to have us take a quick look than to wait.
The bottom line
Early care is simpler, more comfortable, and more affordable than waiting until something hurts. If any of these sound familiar, we'd love to see you.
